Chapter 12: The Night Before

"No," Kanae said.

"It is not a request."

"Then it's a command, and I'm not obeying it."

They were in the old stable, the night before the duel.

The wounded had been moved out hours ago, and the straw was swept, and only two lanterns hung from the rafters.

Vorhaan stood in the middle of the floor with his arms crossed.

He had just told her that she would spend the morning of the duel in the tower with ten guards at the door.

"The terms are single combat," he said. "If you step onto that field, they are broken, and the Pass is lost. Raizen will say we cheated. His ten thousand will charge."

"Then I'll watch from the wall."

"You will watch from the tower."

"Why?"

"Because the Dawnblade will be in his hand." He took a step toward her. "Because I do not know what it will do when it touches me again. Because if I fall, I want you out of reach of every blade on that field."

"You swore not to send me away."

"This is not sending you away."

"You told me to go to a tower with ten guards. You said it was for my good." Kanae lifted her chin. "I made it very clear. 'Never send me away, even when you think it's for my good.' I said it in front of four hundred witnesses."

He opened his mouth, and shut it again.

She watched him go through every possible reply.
