Chapter 15: The Book

Sierra's POV

Blake came back on the second night, after dark, with a split lip and a feed sack over his shoulder.

I was on the porch steps with Dani, who was making me eat a sandwich.

He stopped at the bottom of the drive, and for a second I thought he'd turn around.

"Don't," I said. "Come up."

He came up and put the sack down between us.

Rhys stood in the doorway behind me and said nothing, which I had learned was his way of staying out of it on purpose.

"Dad keeps it in the safe under the feed shed," Blake said. "Mom doesn't know the combination. I watched him open it once when I was fifteen."

"Who hit you?" Dani said.

"Dad's dog. Then Dad. Not hard." He touched his lip. "He saw me with it and he didn't take it back."

I opened the sack.

Inside was a green clothbound account book with a cracked spine, the kind the pack store sold for the year's inventory.

I turned to the first page.

It was a column of dates in an Alpha's square handwriting, the first of every month, going back thirteen years.

Next to each date was one word, tin, and a number.

Next to the number was a second column, and I knew what it was before I read it.

Envelope.

"Every month," Blake said. "The runner took it from the Alpha's study. Mom paid him out of the household money the Alpha gave her. It's the Alpha's own money going out and coming back, so nobody asks where the cash goes."
