Chapter 16: The Beta's Hat

My father got out of the truck alone.

He left the engine running and the headlights on, so that everything he did, he did in front of us.

Four Huddleston wolves had come out of the pines on either side of the drive.

He didn't look at them.

He walked up the gravel in his work coat with his hat in both hands, a heavy, grey-bearded man who had taught me to ride a bike, and he stopped at the foot of the steps.

"Blake," he said.

"Dad."

"You took what wasn't yours."

"Yes, sir."

"Good," my father said.

Blake's mouth fell open.

Rhys stepped past me to the top step, and the wolves in the trees shifted their weight.

"You're standing on my land, Beta," Rhys said. "Say why."

"I came to talk to my daughter."

"She isn't yours," Rhys said, quite gently.

"No," my father said. "She isn't."

He lifted his eyes to me, and I saw that he had not slept either.

"I came to give her something, if she'll let me."

He went back to the truck, reached behind the seat, and came back carrying a folded bundle of grey wool.

It was old and thin, with frayed edges.

He didn't hand it to me.

He held it out toward Rhys, who stood very still.

"It was in the bottom of the cedar chest in the attic," my father said. "The Alpha put it in my wife's arms with the baby. She kept it because it was the only thing the baby had on, and she told herself it was just a blanket."
