Chapter 17: The Oak
"Stay on the porch," I told Rhys.
"Sierra."
"He's alone. He's been alone out there for an hour, and he wants me alone. I'll be where you can see me."
His jaw tightened, and I watched him decide.
"Thirty yards," he said. "I count, and then I come."
I walked down the drive and across the wet grass to the tree line in a borrowed sweatshirt and shorts.
Dalton stepped out from the pines.
He wore a plain grey shirt, with no jacket.
His eyes were red-rimmed, and he looked younger than twenty.
"You came," he said softly.
"You asked."
"I didn't, but I wanted to." His voice dropped into the gentle tone he had used on me for a month before the Gathering, in the school hallway, at the feed store, with his hand at the small of my back. "Sierra, please. My father won't stop, and I can't stand against him. Come with me tonight. Come quietly. I'll take you somewhere he can't reach."
"You mean the truck."
"I mean a place. Just us."
"Your father wants me at the Stone in nine days with my wrists tied. You'd bring me back before that."
His face did something small and ugly.
"You don't understand how he is," he said.
"I understand perfectly."
"Then stop making this hard."
His hand shot out and closed on my arm above the elbow.
It was the same grip as at the oak.
Every part of me remembered it before I did.
I heard him say, "I'm sorry," and then he tried to haul me off my feet over his shoulder.
My wolf came up through the middle of me, fast and furious.
I tore out of the sweatshirt with a snarl.
