Chapter 22: Gina's Grave

Mount Carmel cemetery was white with a thin crust of snow, and the stones stood in rows.

Teo parked at the gate and stayed with the car.

Vince was waiting by the iron fence in his leather jacket, with his hands in his pockets and a bag at his feet.

He looked at Carmine, then at me, and stayed where he was.

"I'll walk with her a minute," he said to his father. "If that's all right."

Carmine looked at me.

"It's fine," I said.

He went on ahead up the path alone.

Vince and I walked along the fence, slowly, and the snow squeaked under our boots.

For a while neither of us spoke.

"I'm leaving after Christmas," he said finally. "I don't know where yet. Somewhere nobody knows whose son I am."

"Okay."

"I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just wanted to say I know what I did. The cellar. The ring. All of it."

"You did it to me."

"Yes."

"You said 'napkin girl' about me to a stranger."

"I know." He winced. "I'll hear that one for a while."

I looked at the back of Carmine's black coat, far up the path between the stones.

"You were the first person who was ever nice to me after my father died," I said. "I won't forget that, either. Both are true."

Vince's eyes went bright.

"He's good to you?"

"He's good to me."

"He should be," Vince said, with a crooked ghost of his old grin. "You're the best one in the family."

He bent and picked up his bag.
