Chapter 21: The Price
He came up the drive after dark with empty hands, as I had told him.
I stood on my parents' porch under the one lit lamp and watched him cross the burned circle of grass.
He stopped at the bottom of the steps.
"Your price," he said.
"You said bring nothing."
"I did."
"Then come inside, and I'll tell you what it costs."
The fire in the living room had burned down to coals.
I had built it myself, with my father's hatchet, because I wanted something to do with my hands.
Caleb stood on the hearth rug and did not sit.
"Three things," I said.
"The first is the porch."
"Your wolves rebuild it, with the Westpoint hands that carried silver across my lawn. You carry the first beam yourself."
"Yes."
"The second is you don't decide anything for me, ever again, and when you're afraid for me, you say it out loud."
"Yes."
"The third is that you don't ask me to be your mate until the ice goes out."
"Then you ask once, and I answer."
"Not the shield. Not the pull in your chest."
"Mine to choose, with a clear head."
His jaw moved.
For a moment I thought he would argue.
He was an Alpha of sixty wolves and he had killed his father with his hands.
