Chapter 9: Two Lines

I took the test in the staff bathroom at Pawprint on Monday, between a spay and a bulldog's ear infection.

I bought it at a pharmacy two blocks away and carried it back in my scrubs pocket, in a paper bag.

The wait was three minutes, and I spent them reading the poster over the sink about hand-washing for veterinary staff.

I had already washed my hands twice.

When I looked down, there were two lines.

The second one was faint, and then it wasn't.

Someone knocked on the door.

"Willa," Jodie said. "You've been in there nine minutes. Either you died, or you're doing something, and I need the bathroom."

I opened the door.

She looked at my face, and then at the stick in my hand, and then she walked in and locked the door behind her.

"Oh my God," she said.

"Don't say anything."

"I'm not saying anything. I'm making a noise." She made it, a small high squeak into her own fist. "Willa."

"I know."

"Are you happy?"

"I don't know."

I sat down on the closed lid of the toilet.

"Rowan has four rules," I said. "The fourth one is no children. Ever. He told me in the elevator before he knew my middle name."

"People change their minds."

"He didn't say it like a man who was going to."

"Then he's an idiot."

"He's not an idiot. He said there won't be an heir, and he meant it." I pressed the heel of my hand against my forehead. "And there's something else."

Jodie waited.
