Chapter 15: The Envelope
"Where?" I said.
Brynn kept her eyes on the glass.
"The marina office. It's taped to the back of the framed photo of your dad's first skiff."
"How do you know?"
"I answered that phone for three years. I dusted that frame every Friday."
"One Friday the picture slipped, and I saw an envelope with your name on it in his handwriting."
"I told your mother, and she said it was a tax paper."
"But you knew."
"I knew his writing," she said. "Everybody at the yard did."
Her mouth shook, and she pressed it flat.
"I'm not asking you to thank me. I'm done being on her side of every wall."
I didn't thank her.
I turned and walked to the elevator, and Myra fell in beside me.
"I'll drive," she said.
The marina office was empty at seven in the morning.
The gulls were already screaming on the roof, and the sun lay in long stripes across the floor.
Brynn's desk was by the window, with her coffee mug still on it and a blue sweater over the chair.
