Chapter 21: Fine Print
On the morning of December 26 I opened the Terms to page 62, where I had stopped in October.
I barely stopped for eighteen days.
For two months I had read the Registry's fine print a page at a time, in the dead hour after the lunch rush.
Now I had a stool in the pantry, the winter break from classes, and a thermos that my grandmother refilled without being asked.
The Terms ran 1,100 pages.
Each page was a white window in my head with plain black letters.
Nothing on them was timed, so Fine Print had nothing to hold, and I had to do the holding myself.
It was just my eyes, and the stool, and the ovens running at the other end of the building.
Joelle came on the twenty-eighth with three days off.
She wore jeans, and she sat on the other stool with a paperback she did not open.
"You read, I'll listen," she said. "If you start talking to yourself, I'll ask what you said."
"They're all the boring parts," I said.
"Then I'll sleep."
She slept against the flour shelf with her boots on, and I got to the end of page 140 before she woke up.
The Registry is not a snarky clerk.
It is a patient one, and it writes down the rules for things no one has done yet.
Article 9 covered pets.
A Deputy shall not Authorize a round at a domestic animal, and a sub-clause added birds.
Article 14 defined Tuesday.
Article 17 said that loot is not income, because the Registry does not recognize the Internal Revenue Service.
