Chapter 29: Gran's Answer
"In the Bible?" I said.
"I read a chapter of it every night at my sister's," Hedy said, and sniffed. "Last night I got to the Song of Solomon."
"Of course she put it there," Leif said behind me.
Hedy opened the Bible on her knees.
Tucked between two thin pages was an envelope.
It was addressed in Gran's loops to Leif Mattson, Duluth, Minnesota.
It had a stamp on it. Eighteen cents.
It had never been mailed.
On the back flap, in pencil, Gran had written a date. June 1982.
"I didn't open it," Hedy said. "It's not mine. It's barely yours."
She held it out to Leif.
He didn't take it.
"Not here," he said. "Not on a curb."
I knew where he meant.
At the inn, Gran's old room on the ground floor had been ready for two weeks.
Fresh sheets. A new reading lamp. A chair by the window where you could see the lake and the kitchen door at the same time.
Hedy stood in the doorway and looked at it.
"No stairs," I said. "Doctor's orders."
"This is your Gran's room."
"It's yours. The apartment over the kitchen is the boat shop's office now. Leif's already put a drafting table in it."
