Chapter 17: Two A.M.
The knock came at two in the morning, three taps and a pause.
I had been at the desk since midnight with the old assembler's insurance forms and a pot of bad hotel coffee.
Dinah was asleep in the bedroom with the door ajar.
I opened the chain.
Lorna stood in the hall in her long gray coat, with snow on the shoulders and no makeup and a banker's box in her arms.
It was a different box from the one in the lobby, but the sight of it went through me anyway.
"You're alone," she said.
"No."
"I mean no cameras."
"No cameras."
"Then I'm coming in."
She walked past me and set the box on the table, on top of the insurance forms.
She did not sit.
"I'm only going to say this once," she said, "so don't stop me."
"Okay."
"I read the page."
She took it from her pocket, folded in thirds, soft already from handling.
"I read it in the parking lot, in the car, at ten. I read it forty times."
"What does it say?"
"That's mine."
She put it back.
"What I can tell you," she said, "is that I signed a contract in October, before I knew anything."
