Chapter 20: The Boxes
The blue slide vanished, and page one of Exhibit F filled the screen over the stage.
It was forty feet wide.
Every word of it could be read from the last row.
CONSULTING AND RESTRICTIVE COVENANT AGREEMENT.
TAVISH DEFENSE LLC. GRADY HARTUNG. LORNA HARTUNG.
Tavish lowered the pen.
"That is a confidential document," he said, "and it has been stolen."
"It came off your lawyer's printer," Dinah said. "To mine."
She tapped a key.
The screen jumped to the payment section.
FIFTEEN MILLION DOLLARS TO EACH CONSULTANT, DUE ON THE DAY OF CLOSING.
She tapped again.
Clause 4.2 filled the screen in red.
The two hundred eighty-three positions sat in the same red as the fifteen million.
Four hundred people read it together.
I heard it go through the room, a long single breath, the sound of a floor learning something.
The heavy board member turned to Grady.
"What is that?"
"A draft," Grady said. "A preliminary."
"It has a notary stamp."
Dinah tapped once more.
The notary's seal swelled on the screen, and under it two signatures.
