Chapter 11: What the Stones Take

Kellan's POV

I left her asleep.

I wrote a note and put it under her mother's lamp, and I told myself I would be back before she woke.

It was a lie, and I knew it on the road.

The packhouse had its gates open for the week of graduation.

Nobody stopped me on the drive, and nobody stopped me in the hall.

Wolves moved out of my way and found reasons to look at their boots.

Vernon Overton's office was on the second floor, at the end, behind a door with the pack crest carved into it.

He was at his desk when I knocked, with the morning sun behind him and a glass of whiskey at his elbow.

It was nine o'clock.

"Merrow," he said warmly. "I thought you'd be along. Sit."

I stayed on my feet.

"I want to know what the oath does."

"Ah." He turned the glass slowly. "You've been up on the Point. You've watched it fail twice. You've been very patient."

"My father swore it on that ridge nineteen years ago, when Stonefall was still the north end of Highridge."

"He did. I swore beside him."

"I know. I was nine when I watched my mother stand in the fifth gap." My voice stayed level. "She was killed on the creek road the next spring. By October my father couldn't shift back. My uncle put him down at the Cold Creek bridge."

"I remember it. A terrible winter."

"You told me it was grief."

Vernon lifted his shoulders.

"It was grief, in a way."

I crossed the room and put both hands on his desk.

I didn't raise my voice, and I didn't need to.
