Chapter 17: The Door

Kellan's POV

I stood behind the cabin door with my hand flat against the wood.

I had promised myself I would not open it unless she told me to.

The rain had thinned to a drip off the porch roof.

Through the boards I could hear four men breathing and shifting their boots.

Devon had pulled on my flannel shirt and nothing else, and she sat on the edge of her mother's bed with the old dog's head on her knee.

"Let the first one in," she said.

I opened the door a hand's width.

"Emmett," I said.

He came in alone, soaked to the skin, with a cream envelope in his fist.

He did not look at me.

"I'm not here for Vernon," Emmett said. "I'm here because he said if I didn't carry it, he'd send someone who'd shout. It's an offer. I haven't read it."

"What's in it?"

"I don't know. I'd put money on the Luna's seat."

He held it out.

She took it, and she looked at the crest, and she carried it to the stove and dropped it into the coals unopened.

Emmett watched it curl.

"Good," he said, and his voice cracked on it. "That's what I'd have done."

"You can go," Devon said.

"I'll wait in the truck. In case you need me to carry something else."

He went out, and he left the door open behind him.
