Chapter 18: What Dane Owes

Devon's POV

Dane knelt on the rug in my mother's cabin with the rain running off his hair.

I did not tell him to get up.

Kellan stood by the stove with his back against the wall, not close, and the old dog lay down between us.

"Say what you came to say," I told Dane.

"I don't have a speech."

"Then say the true thing."

He wiped his face with the heel of his hand.

"I knew you made it easier," he said. "My wolf. When I was eleven, I figured out that it was quiet whenever you were in the room. I never told anyone."

"Why not?"

"I thought it was just mine." His voice shook. "I never asked why. I thought you'd always be sitting somewhere in the house, and I'd be fine."

I sat down on the edge of my mother's chair.

"The night before graduation, I came to your door," I said. "I wanted to tell you I was nervous about the run. You said, 'Dev, it's late,' and shut it."

"I remember."

"I wasn't nervous about the run. I was nervous about being left."
