Chapter 19: Not the Anchor

Dane left when the rain stopped, with his shoulders down and Emmett's hand on his back.

The truck lights swung across the ceiling and went out.

The cabin was quiet.

Kellan had not moved from the stove.

"Say it," I said. "Whatever you've been holding since the porch."

"You don't have to be the Anchor."

I waited.

"You can refuse it," he said. "Flat. Not for a price, not for a trade, not because Dane gets better or worse. The stones chose you when you were six and nobody asked. You're allowed to tell them no."

"Dane goes feral."

"That's Vernon's doing, and Vernon's father's, and every Overton who made the oath. It isn't yours." He came a step closer. "I'll stand beside you if you say no. I'll stand beside you if you say yes. I'd have wanted you without it."

My eyes burned.

"You wanted an Anchor," I said. "Your mother was one, and you watched what it cost. You came to the ridge to find another."

"I came to witness an oath."

"You felt my wolf from the road."

"I felt you from the road." His voice went low and rough. "I didn't know the stones were involved. I knew a woman was climbing a mountain at noon after being left on a step, and she was the only thing I could think about for three days."
