Chapter 20: The Stones

Vernon had the whole mountain up before the sun.

When Kellan and I came over the last rise, both packs stood in a ring around the granite, and the fire pit was already laid.

Dane stood at his stone with a face the color of ash.

The cousins stood at theirs.

Brianna was at the third, between two wolves who had walked her up, in the same white sweater, with her bare hand held against her stomach.

Emmett stood at the edge in his coat, between the fifth stone and the pack.

He didn't look like he had chosen to be there.

"Devon," Vernon said warmly, from the center of the circle. "I hoped you'd come."

"I came to watch," I said.

"Then watch, sweetheart."

He turned to the elders on the bench.

"I call the oath," Vernon said. "The Alpha line is Dane, and the cousins, and Brianna Lanning in Emmett's place, as the girl has been of such use. The fifth gap is taken by Emmett Fisk, who is a good steady boy and has asked to serve."

"I haven't," Emmett said.

"Emmett."

"I haven't asked."

"Come and stand in the gap."

It was the Alpha voice, full strength, and I felt it ring through the granite under my feet.

Emmett's face went blank.

His boots moved.

He walked three stiff steps toward the blank stone, with sweat starting at his hairline and his jaw locked shut, and I heard him grunt through his teeth.
