Chapter 22: The Pool
The side door of the rec center was unlocked at nine on Thursday night, and the gym was dark.
I walked past the folded bleachers and the free-throw line and the office with its glass walls.
At the far end, a steel door stood propped open, and a faint blue glow came out of it.
The pool room smelled of chlorine and warm concrete.
The water was lit from underneath, and the light threw wavering ripples across the white tile ceiling.
The pool was empty.
I stood at the shallow end in my coat with the whistle on its cord against my chest, and I heard nothing but the filter.
Then something moved at the far end.
A dark head broke the water and began to swim toward me, long and steady.
He swam the whole length of the pool without hurrying, and he surfaced against the wall at my feet.
Water ran off his white buzz cut and his broad shoulders.
He looked up at me in the blue light.
"You showed," Abner said.
"I'm late," I said.
"Three Thursdays."
"I know."
I took off my coat and dropped it on the tile.
I took off my dress and my underwear, and I sat on the edge of the pool and put my feet in the water.
It was warm on my ankles.
He stayed where he was, with his forearms folded on the lip of the pool beside my thigh.
