Chapter 5: Four O'Clock
Hoyt locked the AV room door behind us and set his cable case on the floor.
"Sit," he said. "It's short."
I sat in the swivel chair in front of the monitor, and he leaned past my shoulder to move the cursor.
His sleeve brushed my arm, and I noticed it more than I wanted to.
I told myself I was tired.
On the screen, the clock in the corner read 2:36.
The dressing room was empty for two seconds.
Then the door opened, and Blair came in fast, with Porter behind her.
"Lock it," Blair said.
"Somebody will hear us," Porter said.
"Everybody is downstairs. And that camera was only set up for my stepmother's tablet, and Dad had the hospital's wifi turned off at noon."
I went very still.
Blair did not know I had put the camera on the ballroom screen at 2:30.
Hoyt did not say anything.
On the screen, Blair stood in front of the mirror and fixed her lipstick, perfectly calm.
"Dad wants it before three," she said. "Not after the vows. Before."
"I didn't agree to that," Porter said. "I said after the honeymoon."
"You agreed to partner."
Porter was silent.
"There is a notary going to the hospital at four," Blair said. "Her mother asked for one. Dad found out Friday. If Margo is in tears in the ballroom at four, she isn't in that room, and Ellen signs nothing."
"Signs what?"
"Dad says it doesn't matter what. It matters that it's four o'clock and she isn't there."
I gripped the arm of the chair.
On the monitor, Porter took a step toward Blair and put his hands in her hair.
