Chapter 15: Three Pages

Nate's kitchen was as bare as his desk had been, and he was burning eggs.

We had come out through the loading dock, where nobody had a lens, and he had driven us to his building with the heater on high and his hand on my knee.

Now he stood at the stove in his shirtsleeves, scraping a pan.

"You told me you had a very good salary," I said from the stool. "You didn't say you couldn't cook."

"It was never relevant to the contract."

"Dinner is still on you."

"Dinner is on me after the pool closes. I'm practicing." He slid a plate across the counter. "This is a rehearsal."

I ate the eggs.

They were terrible, and I finished them.

He watched me do it with a look I hadn't seen on him before.

"There's something I should show you," he said.

He went down the hall and came back with a manila folder.

He set it on the counter between my plate and his mug and didn't open it.

"Two years ago I wrote you a contract on a Sunday," he said. "You turned it down in four pages."

"I remember. You had a rounding error in the fuel accounts."

"I did. The second year I wrote another and you turned that one down more kindly." He slid the folder an inch toward me. "You said it was because of the little girl."

"It was."

"It was also because of the man. You said 'Blaine needs me to be here,' and I heard what you didn't say, which was that he had never once asked you what you wanted."
