Chapter 19: Kingsley Dinner

The Kingsley dinner was held on Wednesday night, in a private room at the Drake with a table for fourteen.

Blair had sent the invitation herself, on cream card, with a handwritten line.

I would love the chance to make peace.

"She wants you where she can talk," Orson said in the elevator.

"I want her where she can talk too."

He straightened my collar, and his fingers lingered for a moment on the new mark at my neck.

It was a small silver crescent now, healed overnight, and the room turned to look at it when we walked in.

Blair's father sat at the head of the table, a broad white-haired man with a hard jaw and a Kingsley signet on his thumb.

Six elders flanked him in their evening clothes.

Blair sat at his right hand in pale blue, with Broderick on her other side.

Broderick's face was gray.

"Miss Duggan," said Blair's father coldly. "My daughter says you wish to settle this."

"I came to listen."

"Then listen." Blair rose with a glass of water in her hand. "Papa, you all know I would never say this lightly. Keira is a lovely woman. She isn't well."

I took the chair across from her.

Orson took the one beside me and put his hand on the back of it.

"She is not a Queen," said Blair, and her voice was as sad as a bell. "There was no seal. The Crane Pack has a drug that rouses a dormant wolf. A year ago they gave it to a girl in Milwaukee, and she tore a man's throat out."

The elders stirred.

"Orson has been feeding Keira something since she walked into his tower. She lost control on Monday because he was testing it. And now he's pushing her at the charter, because he wants Davenant's seat."
