Chapter 21: Challenge Eve

Orson's POV

She was waiting for me on the mat in the training room at midnight, barefoot, in a black tank top and borrowed sweatpants.

"No," I said from the door.

"You haven't heard it."

"You want to fight Broderick yourself. No."

"I want to fight with you," said Keira. "Not instead of you. Show me what I'd need to know."

I shut the door behind me.

The gym smelled of rubber and cold glass, and every wall was mirrored.

I had trained wolves in this room for ten years.

None of them had ever stood in the middle of it looking at me like that.

"Broderick said no one steps over the stone," I said. "If you cross it, the fight is void and his seat holds. The pack will say I needed the Queen's hands."

"And if he hurts you?"

"Then I get up."

"What if you can't?"

"Keira."

"Don't Keira me." She came off the mat. "You said it ends at the yield or the death. I read that page. I'm not going to stand at the edge of a stone circle and watch him slam you into a wall."

"You'll do exactly that."

"No, I won't."

She hit me before I saw it coming.

It was a flat palm to the chest, with all of the new strength behind it.

I went back two steps and into the mirror, hard enough to make the glass ring.

I looked down at her hand.

Then I laughed.

"Do it again," I said.

She did.

I caught her wrist this time and turned.
