Chapter 15: The Page
"Bascombe," I said.
"Yes."
"Say it plainly. What did he do?"
Percival looked at the cut stub in the green book, and then at me.
"You are asking," he said.
"I'm asking."
"Then you will have it all."
He sat on the edge of my reading desk, with his hands on his knees.
I stood in front of him in the lamplight with my arms folded, in his big coat, and I waited.
"Hugh was in Albany on the first of March," Percival said. "He was gone one day, to sign a treaty with the lowland pack."
"I remember."
"I went into his study at dusk to fetch a ledger."
"Bascombe was at the king's desk, with a man in a grey overcoat."
"A developer from Poughkeepsie."
"What was he doing at the king's desk?"
"Writing Hugh's name."
The lamp hissed.
"He wrote it three times on a blotter until it matched," Percival said.
"Then he wrote it once on a lease, and pressed the Crown's seal into the wax himself."
"A lease of what?"
