Chapter 15: Rule Eight

The doors shut behind her, and the words went with her.

The sky over the quad was black and plain and full of nothing.

I sat on the step until I couldn't feel my legs.

Jess came out ten minutes later with both our coats and her truck keys.

She didn't say I told you so.

She'd never once said it, all fall, and she'd earned it about forty times.

She put my coat around my shoulders and drove me back to her room.

I slept on her floor in my mother's dress, because I couldn't get the zipper down by myself and I didn't want to ask.

My phone lit up at four in the morning.

Linc.

"I'm in his car. He took my phone till now. I'm sorry. It isn't true. I'll fix it."

I turned the phone over.

I didn't answer.

On Sunday he said it out loud.

He posted at eight, a white square again.

I am not engaged to Ainslee Ogden. I never agreed to it. My father announced it without me.

Ainslee posted nine minutes later.
