It was one of my own packets.
A little brown envelope from the greenhouse, the kind I saved seed in every fall.
My handwriting on the front, from last September.
North beds. Heirloom tomato. Saved from the plant sale.
Under it, in his big slanted letters, he'd written something new.
For a garden of our own.
"Where did you get this?" I asked.
"From the greenhouse drawer. Jess said you'd kill me, and then she said you'd probably forgive me." He held it up a little higher. "I'm not asking you to marry me."
"I can see that."
"I don't have a ring. I don't have a trust. I have a mower license and nineteen hundred dollars."
"You're doing a terrible job of this."
"I'm getting to it." He took a breath. "I'm asking for a garden. Wherever you go. Boston, a fire escape, a pot on a windowsill, I don't care. I want to plant these with you next May and see what comes up."
"And then?"
"And then a year from now, if you want a ring, I'll have one. One I paid for." He looked up at me. "And you decide. You're the one who decides. That's the rule I like best."
