Chapter 12: The Hall
The Hall was full by seven on Boxing Day, and every light in the long room was on.
Eighty people from three coves sat at the trestle tables with plates of cold turkey and pea soup and lassy buns.
A fiddler and an accordion played from the stage, and the woodstove glowed red at the back.
Mummers came and went at the door, shaking snow off their lace and shouting to be let in.
Lorcan danced with Sadie.
He had her on his left arm in her red velvet dress.
He waltzed her around the floor in slow circles while she patted his cheek and watched the lights.
Every woman in the Hall was watching him.
The nurse in the bra from the night before said to me, "That's a changed man, my girl," and I said I knew.
I was standing by the coffee urn with a paper cup in my hand.
I had put the pill bottle in a drawer at my father's that morning.
I had told myself I would ask him tonight when the party was over.
He came off the floor and walked straight toward my father, who was sitting by the stove.
