Chapter 11: The Loft

I did not ask him about the pills.

I put the bottle in the back pocket of my jeans and went back through the kitchen, where my father was washing cups.

Then I took Lorcan up the stairs by his belt.

My old room was under the eaves at the back of the house.

It had a slanted ceiling and a single bed with a patchwork quilt.

The window was the size of a tea tray, and it looked over the bay.

I shut the door behind us and turned the little brass key.

"Rule two?" he said.

"I'm starting it."

"Thank God."

I pushed him down on the edge of the bed and stood between his knees.

I took his face in my hands and kissed him, hard.

He groaned into my mouth, and his arms came around my waist.

I could taste my father's rum on him, and the Christmas cake.

My heart was going hard, and not only because of him.

I had three tablets in my pocket and a question I could not make myself ask.

I wanted, more than I had ever wanted anything, to feel him alive under my hands.

"Get up," I said.

He got up.

I pulled his jumper over his head and his shirt after it.

I unbuckled his belt and pushed his trousers off his hips.

He stood in my girlhood bedroom in the light of a forty-watt lamp, naked and hard, with his hands at his sides.

"Hands on my hips," I told him, "and nowhere else, until I say."

"Yes."

I took off my own clothes with my back to the window.

I felt his eyes on every inch of skin as it came free, and I took my time over it.

He lasted until my bra dropped.

He stepped up behind me and put his mouth on my shoulder.
