Chapter 10: Any Mummers 'Lowed In
The knock came at eight on Christmas night, three hard raps on the porch door, and a voice from outside.
"Any mummers 'lowed in?"
My father put down his tea.
"Come in if you're coming," he said.
Six of them stamped into the kitchen out of the snow.
They wore pillowcases over their heads, lace curtains pinned across their faces, men's oilskins stuffed with pillows and rubber boots on the wrong feet.
One had a bra on over a jumper.
One carried an accordion.
Lorcan, who had been sitting at the end of the table with Sadie on his knee, went very still.
"Who are they?" he said.
"That's the game," I said. "You have to guess."
The tallest mummer pointed at him and spoke.
It was a high wheezing voice, and it came in on the breath, not out.
"Ye'll never know me, b'y."
"Why do they talk like that?" Lorcan whispered.
"So you can't tell who it is," I said.
"Is that legal?"
