Chapter 16: The Birth

I ran out of the cabin in my socks.

The voice had come from the road end of the lane, and by the time I reached the gate I could hear it plainly.

"Talya! Talya, please!"

A truck sat there with its door open and its engine running.

An old woman in a man's coat stood beside it with a hand pressed to her mouth.

She was the one from the Kitchen who had touched my sleeve at the Solstice.

On the ground by the front wheel, in a green coat gone gray with snow, lay my sister.

Larisa had both arms wrapped around her belly.

Her curls were stuck to her face with sweat.

"It's early," she said. "It's not supposed to be today."

"I got in the truck, and then it started. She wouldn't take me to the clinic. She said you."

"Aunt," I said.

"The pup's coming head first," the old woman said. "And I am too old to catch it."

I knelt in the snow.

I put my face to Larisa's collar, and I could not help it, I breathed.

Sweat and milk and vanilla shampoo, and under it the sharp bright smell of a pup ready to be born.

I did not need to read the sire.
