Chapter 19: The Boathouse

Rhett's POV

The second wire landed at ten to five on Friday, ten minutes before the care home closed its books.

I sent it on to the care home myself, standing in the resort's one-room business center, and watched the screen say received.

My father had his bed.

It was the cleanest money I had ever been paid, and I felt sick every time I thought of where it came from.

At six on Saturday morning I stood in the boathouse with a mic taped under my shirt.

Joanna had put it there at five, with surgical tape and a fierce, practical efficiency, and she had not been gentle about it.

"If you bring it back damaged," she had said, "I'll break you in a way that's very clean."

"Understood."

"Good. Don't sweat. It makes the tape slide."

Now the sun was coming up behind the dock, and the water was grey and still, and a woman's footsteps came down the boards.

Camille wore white linen and sunglasses and carried two paper cups of coffee.

"Rhett," she said, with every bit of her usual warmth. "You look like you haven't slept."

"I was up with the pictures."

"Of course you were." She handed me a cup and clinked hers against it. "Tripp is thrilled. He sent me out so he wouldn't have to see your face. He gets embarrassed when things go well."
