Chapter 12: Weekend Shift
I did not sleep after Hank's call.
A locked drawer with my name on it meant a year of letters that had never reached me, and I lay awake in Hank's spare room deciding I would not touch them until I was ready to read them all.
Then I got up at four, because I had a shift.
The bakery opened at six on Saturday, and I was there at a quarter to five with my hair under a net.
I had waited three years for that net.
The woman who owned the shop was the one from my birthday table, a short broad person with flour to the elbows.
She handed me an apron, pointed at a rack of cooling loaves, and said, "Slice, bag, don't talk to the bread."
I sliced and I bagged.
It was the happiest I had been at work in years, and my feet hurt, and I did not care.
Floyd came in through the back at five past five.
He had on a clean white shirt, and he looked nervous.
"Trays are by the ovens," the owner told him without looking up. "Don't drop any."
"I won't drop any."
He dropped one in the first hour.
It was a tray of sixteen cinnamon rolls, and they rolled in all directions across the tile.
He stood over them with his hands out, looking stricken.
"You can see," I said. "You can see the floor, Floyd."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"The floor was there when you dropped them."
He laughed, helplessly, and so did I, and the owner told us both to go sit on the flour sacks and eat the ones that landed face up.
