Avery's POV
The boat got its new name on a Saturday, after three votes and one goose.
My four rowers stood on the dock in paint-spattered sweatshirts, around a stepladder, a bucket of white marine enamel and a tray of brushes.
Duncan's mother had sent the paint in a van.
The card in her shaking, upright hand said: For the hull. I have also canceled the newsletter.
Lydia and I had spent the morning rolling four coats over the old lettering, and now the white stern stood bare in the sun.
"We need a name," said the rower with the braid.
"I vote for Banana," said the rower with the gray bangs.
"We are not naming a boat after your lunch," I said.
"It was a very good banana," said the gray bangs.
"I vote for Gold Standard," said the braid.
"That's a car dealership," I said.
"It's a boat dealership," said the braid.
"We don't have a boat dealership," I said. "We have a boat."
The third rower, a quiet man who had not spoken since June, raised one hand.
