Chapter 16: North Road
Thane shifted in the yard.
He tore out of his clothes on the frozen gravel, and the black wolf came up out of the man in one long ripple of fur.
He put his head down at my side.
I didn't ask.
I climbed onto his back and wound both fists into the ruff of his neck, and he went.
He didn't take the road.
He went straight up through the pines, over the shoulder of the ridge, where no car could follow, faster than any car on the road below.
Snow whipped my face.
The trees went by in a gray blur.
I could feel his heart through my knees, huge and steady, and through the mark I could feel what he felt.
This was the north road.
This was the road where they'd taken her.
He didn't slow down.
We came down out of the trees onto the road itself, a mile short of the Blood Moon line, and there was the red car.
It was nosed into the ditch with its headlights on and the driver's door hanging open.
Raine was standing in the middle of the road in the snow, in the clean white dress and somebody's man's coat.
