Chapter 7: Not Even on Your Best Day
The storm came in over the ridge at four, and by five the motel lot was a river.
Birdie sent me to the equipment shed behind the diner for a box of candles in case the power went.
The shed was an old tin shack with shelves of paint cans, motor oil and Christmas lights.
I had the candles in my arms when the door banged open and Boone came in dripping.
"Birdie said you'd gone to the shed," he said. "The wind's taking the sign down."
"Joelle said I wasn't the first thing her father moved off his board," I said. "Who was?"
"I don't know." His jaw set. "I'll find out."
"Then find out, and hold the sign."
"Lena."
The door slammed behind him in the wind, and the latch dropped, and we were in the dark with rain hammering the roof.
He found the string on the bare bulb and pulled it.
The light swung back and forth between us.
I put the candles down on a shelf because my hands wanted something to do.
"Say what you came to say," I said.
"I'm not here to say anything."
"You've been staring at me for two days. Say it."
He pushed his wet hair back off his face.
"You've been pregnant for how long?"
"I took the test three weeks ago."
"Three weeks."
"Yes."
"And you went to a doctor in Missoula, and you got an ultrasound, and you carried that photo in your pocket for days." His voice was rough. "A stranger saw that heartbeat before I did."
"You were out on a run."
