Chapter 23: The Number

"That was you," I whispered.

Griffin's breath stopped on the back of my neck.

"I know," he said.

"You pressed your thumb."

"I wasn't going to." He rolled onto his back and put his forearm over his eyes. "I said I'd never ask you for the number. I said I'd wait. My thumb went anyway."

"You asked me with a bracket."

"It was a reflex. Like sneezing."

I sat up, holding the sheet, and looked at him in the gray light.

His eyebrows had gone wild in his sleep.

"Do it again," I said.

"Miranda."

"Do it. I want to know if it's gone."

He sighed, and pressed his thumb into his palm, hard and slow.

We both watched the air.

Nothing came up.

He pressed again, three times, fast.

The air stayed clean and gray and empty.

"Your turn."

I tapped my thigh with all ten fingers.

I typed every raccoon I had, the geese, the cheese hat, the tree that was his stepmother.

Nothing floated up.

The room was just a room, with a poster on the desk, face down, and the early light on the floor.

"Huh," I said.

"Huh," Griffin said.

"That's it?"

"I think that line was the last one," he said slowly. "It used up whatever was left."

"It said Say the number."

"It said what I was thinking. I'm sorry. It had the worst timing."

I started to laugh.

I laughed until my eyes ran, and the sheet slid off my shoulder, and Griffin looked at me with a kind of stunned joy and started laughing too.
