Chapter 19: The Price on the Pavement
The man in gray pushed off the car and walked toward me.
Dorinda stepped in front of me, and he stopped a polite distance away.
"Two million four hundred thousand dollars," he said. "Your brother-in-law signed a note for it, and he pledged his shares as collateral. Fifteen percent of Holloway Freight."
"Wesley is in jail," I said.
"His shares are not."
"The shares can't be sold in this state until the court says so."
"Then you can buy them," he said. "At face. Today. Or you can sell me the terminal, as he promised."
"No."
He smiled again.
The back door of the black car opened, and a large man in a dark coat stepped out onto the pavement.
He stood there silent, with his hands loose at his sides.
People had begun to come out of the building behind me, drivers and dispatchers with their lunches, because the all-hands had ended and the doors were open.
They slowed and stopped on the steps.
"Mrs. Holloway," the man in gray said, quietly enough that only we could hear it. "You have a heart condition, I understand. And a child on the way. I would hate for the stress to do anything unfortunate."
Dorinda made a sound in her throat.
My cane shook in my hand.
Then Winslow came through the glass doors.
He had heard none of it.
He had seen the car and the big man, and that was enough.
He walked down the steps and put himself between me and the stranger.
"You're talking to me," he said.
"Mr. Holloway." The man in gray inclined his head. "I was just telling your wife about the debt."
"I'll pay it."
"Winslow," I said.
"Two million four hundred thousand. From my own accounts. I'll wire it this afternoon."
"It isn't only the money."
"Then what is it?"
The man in gray tilted his head toward the big man in the coat.
