Chapter 10: The Cookbook Man

Rhys's POV

Colin passed out on my couch at half past one with the pirate hat over his face.

Delaney had left an hour before, alone, and she had kissed his cheek in front of everyone on the way out.

The last guests went down the stairs at two.

I stood over my roommate and listened to him breathe.

I had known Colin since we were nine.

I had lent him money, driven him home, and covered for him with three landlords.

His phone was in his coat pocket, and his thumb was the key to it.

I lifted his hand off his chest and pressed it to the screen.

It opened.

I told myself I was doing it for Hannah, and that was true, but it was not the whole of it.

I wanted to see what kind of man I had been friends with.

The chat was saved under "Dee," with a small heart.

It went back fourteen months.

I read for ten minutes standing in the dark with the phone lit up in my hand.

There was a message from the first week of September.

"She reads that forum every night at ten-thirty. I've seen her laptop. Post it then and she'll see it."

There was another, from the day Colin asked Hannah out.

"If she doesn't cry by Halloween, I'll move to plan B. Mom already thinks she's too fragile to leave town."

I sent every page of it to myself, one screenshot at a time.

I took a picture of the forum login, which was set to Delaney's email address.

Then I put the phone back in his pocket and set his hand on his chest.

I didn't tell Hannah that night.

I wanted to give it to her whole, in the morning, with the proof in order, instead of dropping a pile of messages on her after the worst night of her life.
