Chapter 16: The Envelope
The front row had a card with my name on it.
I sat down in the green silk with my hands flat on my knees.
Ronan took the seat three down from me, and didn't look at me, and I felt every inch of the three empty chairs between us.
Two hundred people in evening clothes turned toward the stage.
The investors sat on the left.
The press sat in a roped pen at the back, with cameras raised.
A woman in a gray suit stood at Landon's elbow, the lab director who had sealed the envelope.
She held a pen and a clipboard, and her mouth was a hard line.
"I want it on record," Landon said into the microphone, "that I asked for this in front of you."
His voice was steady.
His hand wasn't.
"My mother will tell you the Carrington name goes to Carrington children," he said. "Tonight we find out whose children these are."
Marilyn sat at the end of my row in silver.
Kendra sat beside her in a cream dress, with a hand over her stomach, and a small bright smile.
She did not look at me.
The lab director held out a letter opener.
Landon slit the envelope along the top.
He drew out a single sheet, and read it to himself first.
His face didn't change.
His mouth moved a little on the first line.
"Read it," someone called from the back.
"I will."
He lifted the page, and I saw it shake.
"The undersigned certifies that the blood samples of the three parties, collected on October thirtieth, were analyzed for the paternity of both fetuses carried by Jessa Winslow."
A pause.
"The alleged father, Landon Carrington, is excluded as the biological father of both."
