Chapter 5: No Paper Binds a Gown

The lawyer's office was on the ninth floor of a building with no sign on the door.

Kerry's cousin had given me the name, and the cousin had said, "She doesn't lose."

She was sixty, with short gray hair and a fountain pen, and she read my photographs of the divorce papers on her tablet without a word.

I sat across from her with my cardboard box on my knees.

I had not put it down since the train.

"Page six," she said finally. "Did anyone explain it to you?"

"Landon said to initial every tab."

"That's a waiver. It gives up everything in your prenuptial agreement, in one paragraph, under a heading that says 'Housekeeping.'"

"I didn't read it."

"No, you were in a hospital bed, an hour after you fainted, with your husband's mistress in the doorway." She set down her pen. "I would like very much to put that in front of a judge."

I felt something in my chest move for the first time in four days.

"Can you?"

"A signature taken in those conditions, with a medical event that same morning and no lawyer of your own, is not worth the paper." She slid a second document across the desk. "And this is why I asked for your prenup. Who wrote it?"

"His mother."

"Then she is going to hate me." The lawyer almost smiled. "Section nine. If either spouse is unfaithful during the marriage, the other keeps the Larkwood house outright, and receives four million dollars from the offender, in cash, within ninety days."

I read it twice.

"Marilyn put that in?"

"Landon's father had a long history. She wanted it on paper for her son's wife." The lawyer tapped the page. "She never imagined it would be used against her son."
