Chapter 14: Belle Says No

Belle's POV

Frankie was frying eggs at six on Sunday morning when we came in, and she took one look at Brendan and turned the burner off.

He was in yesterday's shirt with his eyes red, and I had his coat on again, and neither of us had slept.

"Coat," Frankie said to me, and pointed her spatula. "You said you'd tell me about the coat when you were ready."

"I'm ready."

"Sit."

I sat at the counter, and I told her in about ten sentences.

I told her about the bracelet, and the church steps, and the little stone at Bonaventure.

I told her that Whit was born on the third of March.

Frankie didn't interrupt me once.

When I finished she took the unlit cigarette from behind her ear, looked at it, and put it back.

"Well, hell," she said.

She turned to Brendan, who stood against the wall with his arms crossed.

"Eat something," she said. "You've got a son to meet, and you look terrible."
