Chapter 15: Lauren's Garden
I texted Brendan from the bus.
*Lauren wants me at four. Her garden. I'm going, and I'm telling you, so you don't hear it afterwards. Come if you want to.*
He answered before the bus stopped.
*I'll come through the side gate.*
He had not gone to Gaston Street the day before.
He had waited for me to say.
I held the phone against my chest for two stops.
This time there was no tea for one at a white iron table.
Monday was the ball committee.
Nine women in pearls and good wool sat around a long table under the bare wisteria with their legal pads and their silver pots.
Lauren sat at the head of it.
Kinsley stood at her shoulder, pouring.
"Annabelle," Lauren said. "How good of you."
She had put me at the foot, in front of the committee, with a cup nobody had filled.
"Ladies, this is the young woman who has been so difficult for Whit," she said. "I wanted you to see her for yourselves."
Nine pairs of eyes looked me over.
"She is living above a fish house with a man old enough to be her father," Lauren said. "A man with a reputation. I felt that someone had to say so in the open."
"Somebody's father," I agreed.
Her eyes flicked to mine, sharp.
I kept my face where it was.
I had made Brendan a promise in a kitchen without saying a word, and it was not mine to spend.
A gate clicked at the side of the house.
I heard boots on the brick path, unhurried, and every head at the table turned.
Brendan came around the corner of the house in a dark suit, with his hands at his sides.
He stopped at the end of the table.
"Hello, Lauren," he said.
She didn't move.
Her cup was halfway to her mouth, and it stayed there.
"I'm afraid I don't know you," she said.
