Chapter 16: Yes First

The rain came in sideways off the river, and I didn't feel it, because his mouth was on my throat.

My back was against a piling at the end of the shack dock, and the wood was slick and cold through my wet sweater.

It was two in the morning on Tuesday.

In four hours Whit's truck would turn into the lot, and Brendan's son would see him for the first time.

We had not said it aloud since dark.

We had said it with our hands instead.

"Belle," Brendan said against my skin. "I want..."

"Yes," I said.

He lifted his head.

Rain ran off his gray-streaked hair and down the gap in his eyebrow.

His eyes were black in the light of the one bulb on the shack wall.

"You don't know what I was going to say."

"I don't care. Yes."

"Tell me to stop," he said, low, and his hands closed on my waist. "Say the word, and I stop."

"Never."

His mouth curved.

"Good girl," he said. "Say it again."

"Yes. Yes to all of it. I'm saying it first, so you never have to ask me twice."

The look that crossed his face was the one I'd seen in my bed over the shack, the first night he slept.

He kissed me.

It wasn't the grief kiss from the car.

It was slow and deep and certain, with the rain running into our mouths, and I felt it in the soles of my feet.

I got my hands under his wet shirt and dragged it up his chest.

He pulled it over his head and threw it on the boards.

The rain beat on his bare shoulders and ran down the hard slope of his chest, over the gray hair and the long white scar.

I put my mouth on the scar.

"You said later," I said. "It's later."

He shuddered.

I kissed along it slowly, from his ribs to his hip, and licked the rain from it.
