Chapter 17: The Shack
Whit came down the dock at a run, and I had on nothing but Brendan's coat.
Brendan was on his feet beside me in damp trousers with no shirt, and I was holding the coat shut at my throat with one fist.
"Get away from her," Whit said.
Behind him, at the top of the ramp, six or seven regulars stood with their coffee in paper cups.
It was ten past six, and the shrimpers had come in early for their grits.
Frankie stood in the shack door in her rubber boots with her arms folded.
Whit's face was blotched red, and he hadn't shaved.
He was in the same gray sweater he'd worn in his mother's garden.
"Belle, step aside," Whit said.
"No," I said.
"He's twice your age!"
"He's forty-four," I said.
"Is that supposed to help?" Whit said.
He swung at Brendan.
It was an open, clumsy swing, left-handed, and Brendan didn't move.
The fist caught him on the mouth with a crack I felt in my own teeth.
