Chapter 13: The Board Room

I dressed for the board in my site clothes.

Boots, work trousers, a plain white shirt, my hair tied up tight.

Fraser watched from the bed with Tilda sitting on his chest, chewing the rabbit's ear.

"You look like you're about to condemn a building," he said.

"I am."

Corinna waited on the porch with her folder against her chest, smiling at the sea.

I stopped in the doorway where she couldn't see his face and spoke low.

"There's a man hiding in the nurses' hall who recorded a phone call."

"I know where he is."

"Bring him to the board room. Don't hurry. Wait for me to say a certain word."

"Which word?"

"Quarter," I said. "As in a quarter past two."

He kissed my forehead, and I took the housekeeper's offered hand, and she took Tilda.

Corinna walked beside me up the path to the ops building.

She talked the whole way, light and kind, about the generators, the guests who were leaving, and the coffee she had ordered for the room.

"You don't have to say much in there," she said. "Damon asked me to make it easy on you."

"Where is Damon?"

"Resting. He didn't sleep. He feels terrible about last night."

"I'm sure he does."

The board room was on the first floor, with a glass table and a view of the strait.

Three investors sat on one side of it.

The lead investor was a woman in her sixties with silver hair and a grey linen jacket, and she had flown in for the dinner.
