Chapter 14: Her Black Dress
The black dress hung on the back of the bathroom door, and I couldn't look at it.
I had bought it at two that afternoon from a shop on Dodecanese Boulevard, a plain knee-length wool crepe with sleeves to the wrist.
The woman at the register had asked, "For a funeral?"
I had said, "For mine."
She laughed, and so did I, and then I had to hold the counter.
Now it was nine at night, and Anders was behind me in the mirror with a zipper in his fingers.
"Hold your hair up," he said.
I held it.
He drew the zipper up my spine in one slow pull, and his knuckles brushed my skin the whole way.
His hand stopped at the nape of my neck.
"There," he said.
I looked at us in the glass.
I looked like a widow, and I looked like a woman about to stop being one.
Anders stood a head above me in his good gray shirt and the one tie he had packed, with his sleeves rolled and his hair still damp from the shower.
He was watching me in the mirror, not the dress.
"You don't have to do it," he said.
"That's twice."
"It's three times," he said.
"I'll say it once more tomorrow, and then I'll stop."
I turned around and straightened his tie.
"I'm hungry," I said.
"I haven't eaten since the airport."
"My sister called," he said.
"She's taken Irini to a hotel on the beach tonight, because the storm's coming, and she says Irini ate two plates of fries.
"She also says there's a Greek place two blocks from here that does a roast lamb."
