"Why?" I said. "Tyler, why shouldn't I ask?"
"Just don't."
"Did you know about the loan?"
He hung up.
I called back.
It went to voicemail.
I texted him.
"Coffee. Tomorrow. 7am. Cups on 25th. Or I ask your father in front of Walt Haskell."
He wrote back an hour later.
"Fine."
He came in at 7:10.
He was wearing a navy polo with a little embroidered logo on the chest.
Chastain Development.
That answered one question before he even sat down.
He saw me looking.
"What?"
"You wore it on purpose."
"I'm going to work after this." He pulled out the chair. "Can we not start like that?"
"You called me insane before you told me you worked for him."
"I'm not full-time."
"That wasn't the question."
He sat.
He didn't order anything.
"Did you know about the second mortgage?"
"I know there's financing on some projects. That's normal."
"On our house?"
He looked at the window.
"Dad needed cash flow last winter. The Pass Christian job went sideways. He was going to lose the crews."
