Chapter 23: The Carrier's Record
Ansley's mother put the microphone in my hand.
It was warm from her grip.
"Five years ago I struck this woman at my daughter's grave," she told the room. "In front of many of you."
"I called her a murderer. Most of you agreed with me."
Nobody in the audience moved.
"She has something to show you. I have read it. I would like you to read it too."
Kendra took a step toward her.
"Mother. You're not well."
"Stand where you are, Kendra."
I looked out at the faces.
I found Vaughn in the dark at the back of the room, standing at the sound booth with one hand on the technician's shoulder.
He nodded.
"Ansley called me twice that night," I said. "At 12:30 and 12:41. I saw her name, and I turned my phone face down. I have said so in public, and I will say it again. I carry that."
A woman near the front gasped.
"But she made one more call after mine."
The screen behind me changed.
A gray page appeared, huge, a column of times and numbers.
One row near the bottom was outlined in yellow.
*1:12 a.m. Outgoing. Kendra Lowell, mobile. Duration: 9 minutes.*
A sound went through the audience, a low wave of breath.
I watched four hundred people read it.
"That is the carrier's record for Ansley Lowell's line," I said. "Vaughn Alden has paid that bill for five years. It is the last thing her phone did."
Kendra stood in the white spotlight with her hands pressed together.
For a moment she swayed on her feet.
Then she lifted her chin.
