Chapter 13: No Questions, You Said
The notary arrived at Dolores's kitchen table at four in the morning with his stamp in a leather case.
He was a small gray man in a raincoat, and he would not meet my eyes.
"I stamped that page without ever seeing you," he said. "I've watched your face on every channel since the ballroom."
"Sign it," said Dolores.
He signed. He swore under oath that I had never stood in his office on Wacker Drive.
He swore that Preston's driver had brought the papers in a taxi envelope, already signed in my name.
When he finished, Dolores held the page up to the light.
"The postnup is dead," she said.
I laughed once, and then I had to sit down on the kitchen floor.
Nolan, still in his wet suit, crouched next to me and said nothing. His hand rested on the back of my neck.
At ten that morning I walked into the Corbin Freight conference room with Dolores on my left.
Preston's lawyer sat across the table, gray in the face. Preston himself did not come.
The board chair sat at the end, and he did not bother to hide that he was enjoying himself.
"Before we begin," he said, "the board has voided the abandonment vote against Mr. Nolan Corbin. It was passed on a lie. His thirty percent is restored."
Nolan, beside me, only nodded.
Preston's lawyer slid a folder across. "My client will agree to a division."
"Your client will agree to what my client asks," Dolores said.
I opened the folder and read the number.
"No," I said.
The lawyer swallowed. "Mrs. Corbin, it's a generous figure."
"I put eighty thousand dollars of my father's house into this company. The company was worth nothing on the day I put it in."
"The postnup..."
"Is dead. You've heard."
I turned the page over and wrote my own number.
