Chapter 6: Not in the Terms

Cade leaned against the door with the key in his pocket.

"Sit down, babe," he said. "You're shaking."

"Open the door."

"After we talk."

He used the voice he used after every one of his friends' jokes, soft and low, the one that had made me feel safe for three years.

I knew now what it was for.

"I don't want to talk," I said.

"You want to be held. You always do."

He opened his arms and came toward me.

I took a step back, and then another, until the couch hit the back of my legs.

He caught me by the upper arm, gently, still smiling.

"Hallie. It's me."

"Let go."

"You'll thank me for this on Monday."

I did not fight him.

I had learned in three years that fighting Cade only gave him something to laugh at.

I took my phone out of my back pocket, held it up where he could see, and dialed three numbers.

His smile stopped.

"Hallie, put that down."

"Nine-one-one, what's your emergency?" the voice said from the speaker.

"I'm being held in an apartment against my will," I said. "Fourth floor, unit 4C. The man holding me is Cade Whitford. He locked the door and took the key."

Cade stared at me.

"You wouldn't."

"I'm being very clear about the address," I said.

His hand dropped from my arm.

He took the key out of his pocket, went to the door, and threw it open.

"Go, then," he said. "Go. You'll be back."

I said into the phone, "He's unlocked it. I'm leaving now," and hung up.

I walked past him without looking at his face.

In the street, the car I had driven was parked at the curb, and Brooke was standing on the sidewalk next to it in her yellow dress.
