He Let Her Wear His Shirt, So I Froze the Club's Money novel · Chapter 22 of 24

Chapter 22: No

The sheriff's deputies took Gus away at four in the afternoon.

He sat in the back of the cruiser with his reading glasses on their cord and did not look at the yard.

By dark I was at my kitchen table with nine years of ledgers stacked beside Rook's bundle of receipts.

Boone sat across from me with a bag of frozen peas on his rib.

Mags had made a pot of coffee and left it without saying a word, which was how I knew she was proud.

"Gus is right about one thing," I said. "My name is on the books."

"Hal."

"So I'm going to read what my name says."

I opened the first ledger.

For two hours I went down the Tulsa contract transfers, one line at a time.

Each one had been moved by a club officer's code alone.

There was no second approval from me.

The operating account needed two, and the system had skipped mine nineteen times, because someone had used the president's override.

I laid my pen down.

"I never touched them," I said. "Not one. He couldn't move them clean while I was signing, so he moved them around me, and he left it all in my books because he thought I'd never read the override log."

"You read everything."

"I read everything." I laughed once, a worn little sound. "He forged my name last week. He didn't think of forging it in the years that mattered, because I was too boring to be worth it."

Boone reached over and closed his hand on my wrist.

It was a plain, warm weight, and I let it stay.

"I'm going with you Monday," he said. "I'll tell the state attorney about the card. Eleven rooms, forty-four hundred dollars, and a false line in your books. That was me, not you."
